On the 29th-30th of June 2002 a DBM competition was organised by UWS/DS as part of the Q-Con games convention in Belfast. This page contains some images of the day and the final results of the competition.
There was an excellent turn out of players (17 + a non-playing umpire) for this event which was held in the great facilities of the Common rooms in Queens University, Belfast.
This was a 2-day, 4-round 400AP open event using BB310 scoring. Everyone had a great time and the games all proceeded smoothly.

Eric Nolan won the door prize.
Below is a selection of pictures from the day.
Graeco-Bactrian vs L.Carthaginian This round one game between Rob Brennan and Tom Sherran was decided by the elephants trying to stop some LH sacking the Carthaginian baggage. This stripped away their support for the Carthaginian cavalry which was then hit by Graeco-Bactrian knights. (10-0 to Graeco-Bactrians).

Eroc Nolan in the 1st Round Given Eric's recent good form, this competition was a little dissapointing for him (finished 13th of 17). However he seems to be enjoying himself during this first round game against Stephen Bankhead's Ancient Brits (despite their warband not wanting to come out of the RGo to play :-). This game finished 7-3 to Eric. Note Tim Snoddy's body language in the background - perhaps he doesn't want to fight Tony after all? |
Feudal Spanish vs LIR (Eastern) More round 1 games. Padraig Bracken on the front left taking on the might of Arnaud's LIR. This was Padraig's first comp with a newly painted Feudal Spanish army. He scored a respectible 2 wins and 2 losses with this Irr Kn(F) army. Some commented that it was perhaps unfortunate to have such an impetious general in charge of impetious troops. This game however finished 9-1 in Arnaud's favour. Arnaud had a great comp and was leading for the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Unfortunately his luck finally turned as his risky 2-ally general command structure came unstuck in the final. In the background you can see Mathieu Bentot playing Seamus McKenna, the umpire David Taylor (in the unusually subdued white t-shirt) and Robin Triggs who competed in the last 2 rounds of the comp.

Graeco-Bactrian vs CACs Alex Moran concentrates on the mess that dominated his left flank for this battle. Despite gaining the upper hand from an early stage, his CinC somehow managed to get committed to this fight. He survived several rounds of combat with bad recoil possibilities (who says Cv(S) aren't any good?) while Alex hoovered up the elements he needed to break the Graeco-Bactrian army. The game finished 9-1 to Alex.
|
EIR vs Lydian Charlie Dickinson's EIR had the benefit of a waterway for this close game but a last-minuite final assault by David Houstan's Lydians managed to break the legions' resolve. 10-0 for the Lydians.
|
Hsuing-Nu vs LPIA Some Hsuing-Nu Bw(I) cower on a hill while watching some mounted action. This game ended as an 8-2 draw in the Hsuing-Nu's favour.
|
LIR vs E.Crusader Mathieu Bentot contemplates his next move against Cillian Cleland's E.Crusaders (Reg version). This game ended as a 6-4 draw in favour of the Crusaders. After a long break from DBM Cillian has just rejoined the circuit - on the day he berated me for advising him to take the regular version of the Early Crusaders as he missed his horde of Irr Kn(F). However at our next club meeting I noticed that he was still fielding the regular version...hmmm. In the background Tom Sheeran plays Robin Triggs.

LIR Closeup of Mathieu Bentot's Late Imperial Romans (painted by Tony Walsh). In front we can see Auxillia with Psioli support while Roman light horse and knights maneuver in the background.
|
LIR vs E.Crusader Another Shot of Mathieu and Cillian's game. Behind them you can see the busy Vietnam participation game run by Stephen Bankhead during round 3. One of the features of this competition is that as it is held with a general games convention you can arrange with the umpire to sit out up to two rounds. For these rounds you score a draw so it doesn't necessarily put you out of contention.

EIR vs Graeco-Bactrian This shot is taken just after deployment as Charlie (Romans) takes his first move. The arrows show the approximate lines of advance. Charlie didn't realise that the Bactrians have a regular command structure so was quite surprised when they lept out of their deployment positions. By encouraging the Romans to fight on the diagonal length of the table their flanks were exposed or held by light troops which the Bactrians disposed of. Despite the Art(F) in the Roman lines the mass of Bactrian skirmishers prevented most of them contacting anything solid. Unfortunately (depending on your PoV :-) the Bactrians ran out of time and the game ended 7-3 to them.
|
Later Pre-Islamic Arab vs Kushan This closeup shows the Tim Snoddy's LPIA Bow and Blade formation supported by Camelry attacking the Kushan Bw(X) line. Err, Tim it looks like some of those camels are drunk.
|
EIR Naval support played a role in many of the armies fielded. In one round over 1/3rd of the tables had waterways on them! This shot shows some Roman galleys supporting James McKenna's Early Imperial Romans.
