We had the best ever xmas turnout with 11 players for the competition. This was a 1-day, 4-round, 200AP competition held in Dublin. Players had free choice from the 18 Middle Earth lists developed by Luke Ueda-Sarson for DBM. Scoring was 0-10 with +100VP. Everyone seemed to have a good time and the games all proceeded smoothly. Rob Brennan was a playing umpire but there was minimal umpire work to do on the day.

** Only played 2 games.
Players on the same score were seperated by placing the player with the better result from their own games higher if they met and then by finding the sum of their opponents's scores. The player which played against a higher sum of opponents' scores was placed higher.
Thanks again to everyone who turned up and made it a successful event.
Below is a selection of pictures from the day.
The freshly painted Noldor battle-line of Reg Bd(F) with archers and horse-archers in the background. These are Chariot miniatures. |
Glaurung the dragon (El(X)), acting as the CnC for the Angoband army and supported by orc wolf-riders. |
More scary stuff from the Angoband army. Here we see some trolls (classified as Irr Bd(S) with Psioli support) advancing in column with a Balrog sub-general at the rear of the column (also Irr Bd(S) with Psioli support). To the left you can see some of the copious amounts of orcish Irr Ax(I) "filler" in this army. |
Here's a shot of a nightmare situation - Rohan Irr Kn(F) are charging impetiously at a group of 3 Mumakil (graded as Irr El(S)). Needless to say it didn't go well for the knights. The game ended 10-0 to Richard playing the Mumakil wielding Haradrim. |
This shows a shot of a game between a Gondorian army played by Rory Meehan and an interesting Rohan army taken from the brief period of Dunlending occupation of Rohan played by Vinny Carpenter. The Gondorian spear are seen in the background - could they intervene in time? Obviously not as the game went 10-0 to Vinny. |
The Sindar army used in the competition by Alec McTurk had many unusual options including an allied dwarven command of mattock-bearing Irr Bd(X) dwarves and a were-bear which was classified as an Irr El(O). The actual bear figure used is an old 25mm figure but it looks suitably impressive on the table! |
One nice feature of the comp was a lot of very quick games. This meant that people could try and squeeze in extra games between rounds. Here both Cian and Richard get in a bit of practice between rounds 3 and 4. |
Vinny gesticulates while Tony concentrates during round 3. |
This image shows the hordes of Angoband advancing on the even bigger horde of Dunlendings (over 60EE in a DBM 200 army)- I bet those Dunlending Bw(I) are pretty scared of the advancing Bd(S) trolls. Unfortunately the game timed out as a 5-5 draw. |
This shot shows games during round 4. From left to right, Alec, Cian, Rory, Tony and Eric. One of the handy things about playing at xmas is that there is always plenty of beer about. |
