Results

There was an excellent turn out of players (13 + non-playing umpire) for this event (including several new faces) which was held in the peaceful majesty of the hills around Macroon in Co. Cork. Hopefully this will encourage other pockets of DBM players around the country to "risk" hosting events outside of Dublin and Belfast. People are definitely willing to travel for DBM!

This was a 1-day, 3-round 400AP open event using 0-10 scoring with +100VP for a win. We were lucky with the weather and our host Richard put on an amazing spread of food and entertainment ("you bring the beer, I supply the food"). Everyone had a great time and the games all proceeded smoothly.

Below is a selection of pictures from the day.

Indians defending a river vs Kushan

Classical Indian vs Kushan

Eric's day got off to a dodgy start when his Kushan failed to
break through a determined defence of a river by newcomer
Peter's Classical Indians. He did go on to win the comp though
so we don't feel too sorry for him!

Leidang landing troops

Leidang vs Kushan

Naval forces played a prominent role in this competition with
three of the competitors fielding a naval component. The
Leidang force of 4 Bts (S) (longships) was the most
significant though. Here they are seen working the flank of
the Kushan line.

Han LH get around the flank

Graeco-Bactrian vs Han

In something of a grudge-match the Graeco-Bactrians (Rob)
lined up against the Han (Padraig) in the first round. Last time
they met in competition it had been a last-minuite 10-0 to the
Graeco-Bactrians. Armed with some army-list advice, Padraig
had fine-tuned his army to be a Graeco-Bactrian killer... from
deployment in this game it seemed that the Bactrians had their
Han's full (groan) but the over enthusiastic flanking move by
6 Han light horse(F) led to their downfall as the Bactrian mix of
O and S LH quickly about-faced and butchered them, breaking
the Han attacking command and turning the tables in the game.
The game timed-out at 7-3 to the Bactrians which was
depressingly their best result of the day.

Scots attack the fortified baggage

Pre-Feudal Scots vs Classical Indian

Here the Scots cavalry try their luck assaulting the CI baggage
encampment - they didn't have any and lost a general in the
attempt!

The going gets tough at the top

Burgundian Ordonnance vs Patrician

This was a very close-fought game that could have catapulted
either of the contenders into 1st place... it ended in a draw
ensuring that neither was in the running.

General shot of the Shed

Three games in Richard's Shed

We had fantastic weather on the day and many games were
played in Richard's shed which was both shaded and
suitably breezy - perhaps this is a good solution to the
common complaints about the "intensity" of wargames
comps in enclosed spaces?

Isaurians defend a steep hill

Graeco-Bactrians vs Patricians

A central steep hill defended by Patrician Isaurian Ps(S) was
vital in this battle of maneuver fought by these two mobile
armies. The Graeco-Bactrian push on the left was avoided
by most of the Patrician army (which can be just seen escaping
to the right). The Bactrian Auxillia had insufficient numbers to
push the Isaurians off the hill and the game ended 5-5.

Willie moves those hordes of Leidang

Willie and his Danish Leidang

Willie was one of the Cork contingent playing in their first
DBM competition. Hopefully they'll be back for more!
