On the
25th-26th of January 2003 a DBM competition was held as part of the Warpcon
convention hosted by the WARPS Gamers at UCC. This page contains some images of
the day and the final results of the competition.
Numbers were excellent for this competition, as a 2-day, 4-round 350AP event in Cork demands a big commitment from the players. We had 12 players on the first day, and 11 on the Sunday. Scoring was 0-10 with +100VP. The armies were restricted to the date period 476 AD to 1072 AD. Everyone seemed to have a good time and the games all proceeded smoothly. The venue was superb in the Mini-Restaurant on the UCC campus, airy, light, spacious and coffee on tap 30 feet away. Sharing the room with the GW competitions meant that all figure gaming was in the one hall with no other game disciplines represented. A big thanks to Peter O’Brien who bridged the “Great Divide” by putting on a 28mm Warhammer Ancient Battles demonstration game which generated a lot of interest.

Below is a selection of pictures from the day.
|
General Shot of the Games Room This picture shows Tony deep in thought as his Armenians face Richard’s Arabs. Then, left to right, Padraig, Peter O’Brien and the 25mm game, Paul Dalton, Alex Moran, Matthieu and Cian. This gives a good view of the excellent room we were located in. |
Pre Islamic Arabs vs. Armenians Manoevering in mist (it lasted for the first four bounds) the Arabs advance at a speedy 100 paces a go towards Tony’s Armenian bow line. The game ended 9-1 to the Arabs but with the Arabs ˝ an element away from destruction. |
|
Dynastic Bedouin vs. Central Asian Turks Bedouin LH(O) and Bw(X) form a line against Uighur LH(F). Behind the Uighur skirmishers two blocks of Sp(I) manoever for advantage whilst the columns of Cv(S) Nobles watch from afar. |
General Shot of the Third Round Eric Nolan explains to Cillian how much frontage the Kushan’s occupy if the LH are fast rather than superior. Cian Merne sees the humour!! William Coughlan and Padraig Bracken play out a Kn(F) frenzy and behind them Paul Dalton and Tony Walsh fight a crucial battle for ranking points. |
|
Redeployment Lines of LH redeploy behind advancing Nobles. |
Kushan mixed formation of Elephants, Auxilia and Psiloi The Kushan elephants often proved to be “the weakest link” for Eric. None more so then when they charged Alec McTurks 4 deep Wb(S) led by a General!! |
|
A Crucial Moment Paul Dalton and Tony Walsh discuss the finer points of their game. Padraig and Cian look on (getting tips?) |
25 mm Huns Some of Peter O’Briens 25mm figures from the demo game. They look cool but just imagine the length of your arms after lugging toolboxes full of them around !! |
