Alexander's Greatest Battle Refought

1. Initial Deployment

This event held in Dublin on the 24th of April 2004 was designed to link-in with the main Society of Ancients (SoA) Battle-Day which took place on the 3rd of April in England and another satellite event which took place in Australia on the 17th of April.

The battle: Gaugamela, 331BC – the decisive battle between Alexander the Great's Macedonians and the assembled might of the King of Kings, Darius III of Persia.

This refight used the De Bellis Multitudinis (DBM) wargame rules version 3.0. The battle was fought at the rule's ideal scale of 256 men to an element or approximately 80 men to the figure. As the battle was fought on a large open plain and between approximately 50,000 Macedonians and 250,000 Persians this required about 3000 miniatures and a 12' x 4' table. We used Luke Ueda-Sarson's detailed scenario and order of battle for the two sides.
