Here we see the Persians (left) deployed with a block of infantry in their centre and two large wings of cavalry. To their rear are cowering 86 elements of Persian "Hordes" representing approximately 86,000 men. In front of their main battle line they have scythed chariots, skirmishers and on the far flank Scythian/Bactrian heavy cavalry. The Macedonians on the right of the picture have a central phalax and wings of heavy cavalry, skirmishers and medium infantry deployed in echelon. Alexander's wing (near the top of the picture, the Macedonian right flank) started the game slightly advanced to encourage a historical evolution of the battle. The centre of the battlefield contains a cleared area in which the Persian chariots were slightly more effective (although this had no effect in our refight).
