Strongbow's Shield 2003 Report
On the 2nd of August 2003 a DBM event was organised by RINIWA in Dublin. Two competitions were held there; a 200AP open event and a 325AP Successors theme. This page contains some images of the day and the final results of the competition.
There was an excellent turn out of players (20 + a non-playing umpire) and a few spectators for this event which was held in the usual DGG location of the Teachers Club, Parnell square, Dublin. There were a number of new faces - which is always nice. This year for the first time we had two competitions at Strongbow's Shield, a 200AP Open and a 325AP Successors theme played on small (DBM200-sized) tables. The theme format is very similar to the way that 25mm DBM is normally played in England.
There were 4 rounds in the Open event (2 hour games) and 3 rounds in the Theme (2.45 hour games). Both competitions used +100VP scoring. The Theme was restricted to Successor armies but in addition to the official lists, Luke Ueda-Sarson's unofficial Successor lists were also allowed.Everyone had a great time and the games all proceeded smoothly. The umpire was Tony Walsh.

Massagete vs New Kingdom Egyptian Tim Snoddy (Massagetae) was on a good roll during this comp but relative newcomer Nicolas Duval (NKE) was still able to hold Tim to his only 5-5 draw of the day. These beautiful New Kingdom Egyptians were kindly supplied by John Lavery. Tim went on to win the competition and Nicolas won both the Top Dog Handicap competition and the David and Goliath prize.
|
Edmond's Early Crusaders Edmond played Early Crusaders in his first DBM competition and scored a very respectable 14 VP on the day.
|
David Brown's Pre-Feudal Scots David is a regular member of the Belfast DBM scene but I think that this was his first Dublin competition. He seems happy in this photo but I believe that his Viking ally was unreliable in 3 of the 4 games! |
LPIA vs Arabo-Aramean Alec (right) is obviously concentrating hard on this game - it must have paid off as it finished 6-4 to him. Richard's LPIA were having a bad day. |
Phil Sherlock's Georgians Phil could only make the 2nd two games in the afternoon - imagine his shock at finding that he'd have to play Richard Aynsley at the bottom table. Phil looks happy here because he hasn't started rolling any dice... This game didn't last long. (10-0 to Richard) |
Richard Aynsley in round 3 Richard hadn't been having a good day - first a loss to a newbie (blades dying to bowfire against the wind!), then a losing draw against a player outside the top 10. He started round 3 on the bottom table, he wasn't planning on taking any prisoners...and he didn't 12 mins later he'd won 10-0. It kinda helped that Phil Sherlock (left) couldn't roll more than a 2. |
Early Achaemenid Persian vs Massagete Tim Snoddy (Massagete, left) defends the top table against new player Phil Waldron's Early Achaemenid Persians (right). Well the historical version of this encounter was recreated with Cyrus going down 0-10 to the Massagete with their Mountain Indian allies. |
Medieval Portugese vs Pre-Feudal Scots Darragh , an occasional DBM player, moves his Medieval Portugese into the Scots' proto phalanx. This game timed out 5-5. |
LPIA vs Arabo-Aramean This is a close-up from Richard and Alec's round 2 game. A column of blades makes it's way towards the Arabo-Aramean wall of bow while in the dunes in the background there's some camel on camel action. |
E. Crusader vs Kushan A close-up of Kushan (umpire's army) cataphracts and elephants about to hit the Early Crusader shieldwall. Those spear better hold - the baggage is pretty close. Are those pigs or dogs?

The 325AP Successors Theme
On the left (front to back): Cillian, Richard (what's he doing there!),
Paul. |
|
Asiatic Early Successor (Demetrios) vs LUS Antigonid Round one game between Eric (Antigonid) and David. This shot sees David's Bts(X) intervene in a clash of phalanxes in the centre of the table. |
Seleucid vs LUS Eumenid Successor Jeremy Dowd and Paul Kavanagh battle it out in the last round. This was Paul's first competition and Jeremy's first in Dublin. |
Asiatic Early Successor (Demetrios) vs (LUS) Antigonid Round 3 game between David (Demetrios) and Eric. This shot shows a pike shoving match with one flank protected by Elephants and cavalry and the other by, eerr, nothing. David won 110-0. |
Asiatic Early Successor (Demetrios) vs (LUS) Antigonid Round 3 game between David (Demetrios) and Eric. David's 9-element fleet slightly out numbered and outgunned Erics two galleys and a boat. |
(LUS) Western Asiatic Successor vs (LUS) Macedonian Successor Round 3 game between Donal (W.A. Successor) and Darren. This was the top table for the final round. Despite Darren's flank march arriving (upper left corner of the board) this game ended in a draw with neither player finishing in the prizes. Donal has just returned to Ireland after a couple of years in the US. |
(LUS) Western Asiatic Successor vs Asiatic Early Successor Round 2 game between Donal (W.A. Successor) and David. This picture shows David's pike punching a hole through Donal's hoplites (Irr Sp(O)) and mounted streaming towards the gap. One special rule for this comp was that only 1 rank counted against El. |
Seleucid Jeremy Dowd's very pretty pike phalanx. |
Seleucid Vs Eumenid Successor Cillian and Paul playing in the 2nd round with David and Donal in the background. |
Seleucid Vs LUS Eastern Asiatic Successor Round 3, table 2 and a flank march seemed like a good idea - oops (flank-marching) ally is unreliable. Double-oops when small Kn command broke and ally changed sides. Luckilly the phalanx was more than 50% of the army so we play on. Before the enevitable collapse the Seleucid (Cillian) CnC's command went down. Game ended 107-3 to Cillian. |
Darren and Donal in round 2 Partially due to time limitations we played on preset terrain for this competition. This enabled a better standard of terrain than is usually seen at DBM competitions. Hopefully these photos show that the effort was worth it as many of the pretty boards full of nicely painted figures looked very impressive. |
